Violin scroll, 2nd level done. Does it look acceptable?

Hi Bryan, yes, please check the tools list. I have the listed chisels and I basically used the reccomended by Corvus for carving the scroll, plus a couple mini chisels I found useful too.

I've been working from the tool list. i have 4 of the Pfeil in larger sizes, and an assortment of lower grade with a variety of curves - rough approximation of the 8 or 9 you suggest. that list has been very helpful.

i'm starting in as someone that has done engineering, CAD electromechanical and metal work for all of my professional life, so I have a really nicely equipped shop - for that realm. but getting woodwork up to speed has been interesting. my bride is focusing on guitar luthiery, so the focus since Christmas has been to get guitar OM and dread molds complete, radius sanding bowles, etc. Lots more required compared to violin. I like the idea of being able to put all this violin making into a nice toolbox in the VW Westy for a few years of travels. so much fun, so little time....

Hi Corvus. I´m posting front and top view pictures now (I added some pencil lines). Thanks for the comment. I´m worried about symmetry and general shape of the scroll, all very logical 😅

I think you are in the right direction.

Is the very top 12mm? Something seems off, either the very top is too wide or the back of the roll is too narrow?

But it’s ok, it won’t affect the sound.

Just make sure the center line is still in the center, then it’s ok. Because we will need it to join the scroll onto the body later.

I think both things are as you say: the very top of the first scroll is 14 mm (I don´t know why!) and on the second scroll is 12 mm; but I think the back of the roll (at least on one of the scrolls) is too narrow... It´s a constant during my work on the firts violin that I tend to file too much in general instead of mantainning always a wood working margin until just the last step 😫 I must improve this in every step. I guess it´s a lack of patience. Thanks for the comment 😉
